Official Teamster Local 519 letter of endorsements to membership

In his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln called democracy "government of the people, by the people and for the people." It means that we are not here to serve our government, but that our government is here to serve us – and we have the right to decide who will represent us and how we want to be represented. The greatest way to be heard with great clarity and great force in this country is to go VOTE! As Teamsters, we have a moral responsibility to see that our government is protecting the rights of the working men and women of our country.

Early voting starts in this state July 18, 2008 and ends August 2, 2008. Election Day is August 7, 2008. These dates serve as the general local elections, as well as the Senate and Congressional primaries. Please take time to study the candidates that are running where you live so you may pick the most labor friendly candidate.

The Executive Board of Teamsters Local 519 has had the opportunity to interview several candidates and have made the following endorsements.

U.S. SENATE - BOB TUKE

Bob is a Marine and Vietnam Veteran. Bob is committed to helping the working men and women of our state. He is committed to supporting the Employee Free Choice Act, fighting against a NAFTA Super highway, and trade agreements that improve working conditions, lift wages and living standards, and create job growth in the United States.

U.S. CONGRESS 4TH DISTRICT - LINCOLN DAVIS

Lincoln was a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act. Lincoln has always been very supportive on labor issues.

CRIMINAL COURT JUDGE - KEN IRVINE

Ken currently serves as Criminal Court Judge. Previously, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney under the leadership of District Attorney Randy Nichols. Ken served seven years in the Army, including service with the Army Rangers and 101st Airborne Division.

KNOX CO SHERIFF - J.J. JONES

Over the last twenty nine years, J.J. has worked his way up the ranks of the Knox Co. Sheriffs Office while never forgetting where he started in the ranks. The workers of the KCSO respect his leadership and commitment to the community of Knox County.

Teamsters Local Union 519 asks you to support and vote for these labor friendly candidates if they are in your district. The Senate candidate can be voted for by anyone that lives in the state of Tennessee. We do deeply regret we did not have the opportunity to analize many more candidates around the various counties within our jurisdiction.
